This will be
the last newsletter for the season. Your support and positive
comments made my task an easy one. I am especially in debt to
Les Stuart for his help in supplying me with a steady stream
of photos. Enjoy the winter months (bowling, blobbing out,
travelling, reading, or whatever) and hopefully we will meet
again in September.

Gary
Club Men's Junior Singles
Thanks to Val Ives for the following
report Gary deRidder
won the Men's Junior Singles today (Monday 14
April) when he beat Dave Roberts. An excellent
game Gary got away to a good lead and was 10- 3 up
when he put the jack out and Dave put the mat up
and scored a 4. Then the game was even until Gary
went ahead again. The bowling was as good as you
would expect to see at Rep. level - lots of
touches and great spectator value. On the last
end Dave was holding two to level 20 all but Gary
drew it with his last bowl. The spectators were
treated to a superb final. The weather had started
to pack up but they all stayed. So a big thanks to
them.

Men & Women 1st Year Singles
This event took place on Saturday. Each player
took part in four games and the best two went
thorough to the final. Bowls Taradale had three
entrants (Les
Stuart, Bev Stuart, Alex Jones) all of whom played
well but failed to reach the final. The title was
won by
Craig
Drummond of Kia Toa in a hard fought game against
the only 4-winner Wendy Hicks of Bowls Heretaunga.
Champion of Champions Junior Men Singles
The Junior Men's COC Singles was played yesterday
in cold breezy conditions. Our representative,
Gary deRidder, had the unenviable task of
playing the eventual winner (Byron Brook - Heretaunga) in his first game. Despite that Gary
played well and at the three quarter stage had his
nose in front before Byron edged ahead to win by
about 4 points. Not bad for a Year 2 bowler, was
it? The runner-up in the final was from Bluff Hill
(can't remember his name, sorry)

If you want to win
you must practise
THE IDEAL SKIP:
To make a success of skipping players must have a lot of
confidence in their own ability. They must be top-notch
draw bowlers because more often than not this is the
shot they have to play. If their draw shot is not their
best and most consistent shot they should not be
skipping. They must be capable of good trail shots, firm
shots to rest bowls or push them through and must also
be accurate drivers. The drive must be held in check in
case that which is a bowling virtue becomes a bowling
vice. The skip should only drive when they can afford to
do so. Every shot must have a definite objective and if
there is a danger that one’s own bowls will be lost then
the shot should not be played.
The skip must try to get the very best out of the side.
Stressing the obvious such as too narrow, too wide or
too fast will not give the poor player who has played
the bad shot any confidence. Skips must overlook poor
shots and let the players know they believe in them and
know they will do better. Harmony in a side is just as
important as the bowls that are played.
Skips have to realise that every player in the side is
doing their best. If they give the impression, by word
or action, that they have lost confidence in the team
then it is skip’s fault when the standard of play
quickly deteriorates.
WIND MOVES THE JACK
I
was playing a game of triples on a very windy day
when a sudden gust of wind caused the jack to move
about half a metre. You might think it an easy
task to replace the jack to its former position
but what if, before the jack had moved, two
opposing bowls were very close (it was a
"measure") and it was not easy to get the jack
into its exact previous position?
Law 53Unforeseen incidents If, during the course of play, the position of
the jack or a bowl is altered by the wind, a storm
or any other unforeseen incident, the skips or
opponents in Singles should put the jack or bowl
back to its former position. If they cannot agree
on the jack’s or bowl’s former position, they
should declare the end dead.
Etiquette
Do not wander around or move about the head when a
player is about to deliver a bowl.

AGM Elections
We have our
annual elections in the very near future and there are a
number of important retirements from our committee, which
will need filling. Please give this serious thought.
Nomination forms are on the Notice Board.
QUOTE
When you are bowling, only the game in which
you’re bowling is important - not the next game,
or tomorrow's, or last week's.
Closing Day
Next Sunday, 27 April, our bowling season comes to an end.
Many would have been impressed by the huge turnout on Opening
Day. Let's make Closing Day even bigger. Names are to be in by
12.30 pm, whites are to be worn and there is a $5 finger food
charge for those wishing to stay on and have something to eat.
Emirates Volunteers
On May 2 & 3 we are responsible for organising
and hosting the EMIRATES $10,000 Bowling
Tournament.
This
event is very popular (I am told it is full and
there is a waiting list) but volunteers are
needed urgently.
Terry Christensen has offered to coordinate
volunteers.
4 or
5 are needed during the day on Saturday
4 or
5 are needed during the day on Sunday
A
larger number are needed on Saturday evening
assisting with the meal.
If
you can help in any way please phone Terry on

sleep!!!
Congratulations
Special congratulations to Noeline and Ron
Gardiner.
Their daughter, Anne, gave birth on Friday
in Hamilton to twins - one of each.
From all accounts Mum and babies are
thriving.

Kiwis Lose World Cup Finals
from
Bowls NZ website
It was a black day for New Zealand’s World Cup
singles bowling finalists at the world indoor
championships, Ali Forsyth and Val Smith, as they
stumbled at the last hurdle in Warilla, NSW, today
(Friday). The hottest player on the world circuit
at the moment, Malaysia’s world singles champion
Safuan Said, accounted for Forsyth in the men’s
final, 9 – 5, 11 – 1. Because of his world title,
Safuan is ranked number one in the world, while
Forsyth is currently ranked number two. But the
women’s final didn’t go according to rankings, as
Smith, also because of her win in January’s world
championships in Christchurch, is the world’s
number one, while her victor, Guernsey’s Alison
Merrian, is ranked number five. On her way through
to the final, in which she beat Smith,
17-3, 1-10, 4-0,
Merrian had beaten Smith in section play and the
hot Australian favourite, Karen Murphy, in her
semi-final.
World Cup final results:
Men: Safuan Said (MAL) beat Ali Forsyth (NZ) 9-5,
11-1
Women: Alison Merrien (GUE) beat Val Smith (NZ)
17-3, 1-10, 4-0.
COLLEEN
MISSING
My
computer swallowed Colleen.
Yes, honestly its true!
I pressed 'control' and 'enter'
And she disappeared from view.
It devoured her completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Google
My searches to refine.
The reply from it was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'
So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Colleen you should see,
Please Copy, Scan and Paste her
And send her back to me.
WILMA AND CRAIG SEND THEIR BEST WISHES
Best wishes to all for a very happy "Closing
day" - hope everything goes well.
Hong
Kong was fascinating - nearly 7 million people
in such a small area. We certainly couldn't live
there - didn't like the very high buildings.
Ocean Park was marvellous - We were both amazed
with the seal and dolphin show - those animals
were in top condition, were happy and obviously
enjoyed performing - we swear that they were
smiling!!! There were over 4000 people at the
show! A good hotel to stay at and we walked
around a lot - watched some school groups at the
Art museum - very well behaved kids and focused.
London - crowded, busy. We went on a general
tour in morning with very good guide - Changing
of the guard etc. etc. Afternoon, same guide and
off to Windsor Castle - really great to see -
saw inside rooms and apartments - saw a huge
amount of history etc. etc. Really worth going.
Went through the prettiest little village -
Datchet on the way - lots of famous people live
there - Elton John etc. About 45mins from London
- a good commuting distance but you would need
millions of £/$ to purchase anything. The little
village of Windsor is fascinating - modern mixed
with history! Actually you need a fair few $N.Z.
to do anything much!!!
Day
2 went with the Big Bus Tour - on again/off
again. Madame Tussauds - very different and up
to date and then to the Tower - typical touristy
things.
Next
day off to York - Yes Sue and John Brock we
walked round the outer wall (at least some of
it)- went to York Minster - wandered in the rain
on day 2 but had a great time and then off to
Glasgow the next morning.
Big
hold-up with an accident - an hour late
arriving. We are staying in our 2nd "OLD (as in
1794) hotel - thought that we had woken up in a
bedroom at Buckingham Palace this morning -
absolutely beautiful even if it was snowing and
the hills were white!! No doubt you are having
much warmer temps. there.
Anyway that's it for now - Best wishes to all
and hope everyone is happy and well.
Craig and Wilma.
